Zaagi’idiwin

Overall size: 8'ft x 9ft high

Collaborating with artist Bekah Brown on this installation that is now housed at the Daniels DU East, 660 Dundas Street in downtown Toronto.

In Bekah’s words

“Zaagi’idiwin is the word for love in Anishinaabemowin and it is one of the seven grandfather teachings. These teachings are guidelines for how to live life in a good way; the teaching of love being at the core of each one. Love is represented by the eagle as it is the being that can fly the highest, closest to Creator, seeing things from a distance, and carrying the other teachings on it’s back.”

When I first read the idea and symbolism behind the sculpture, I was already in. That same morning I had found a beautiful eagle feather and put it into my sketch book not knowing it was going to consume me for the next 3 months. Was fun building it. Many experiments, many jigs and many cracks later the process started to come together.
